Welcome to the course on:

Aquaculture Fundamentals

From Data to Decisions

Gain a real-time understanding of commercial aquaculture and the key numbers and thought processes that drive successful operations

Aquaculture relies on understanding what production data reveals about a farm. Production indicators provide the foundation for monitoring performance, identifying trends, and supporting sound farm management.

This fundamentals course introduces the core concepts, calculations, and production metrics used throughout the industry, helping you understand what should be measured, how it is calculated, and why it matters. Designed for fed aquaculture systems, where feed inputs are managed to achieve growth, the course explores the production information that underpins commercial performance.

Through five practical modules, supported by practical exercises, worked examples, and downloadable calculators, you'll build the production literacy that underpins sound operational, business, and strategic decision-making.

WHO IT'S FOR

Built for Every Role in Aquaculture

Farm management

Understand the production metrics, calculations, and data systems that underpin sound farm decisions, so you can interpret performance, identify where to improve, and manage with confidence.

Technical & production staff

Learn how your operational activities, stocking, feeding, grading, and data collection drive the production metrics that determine farm performance.

Training leads

Give every new hire a solid production foundation from day one so you're not starting from scratch each time, and standards stay consistent across every site.

Graduate trainees

Hit the ground running in your first production role with a practical understanding of how commercial aquaculture farms actually operate, not just the theory.

Government officials, lawmakers & extension officers

Build the technical literacy to design better policy, ask the right questions, and meaningfully engage with the industry you're supporting or regulating.

Investors

Cut through the jargon and evaluate farm performance with confidence, so you can ask sharper questions, spot red flags, and assess opportunities without needing a technical co-pilot.

University students

Bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world practice, and enter your first research or industry role with a grounded understanding of commercial production.

Development organisations

Design interventions that reflect the realities of commercial farming, monitor the outcomes that actually matter, and engage more meaningfully with implementers and farmers, so your support creates a genuinely enabling environment

Aquaculture consultants

Establish a common production language with your clients and frame your recommendations in terms that resonate, from feed conversion to stocking density to harvest planning.

DATA IN ACTION

Feed Conversion Ratio Moves Your Margin
Far More Than You Think

Data matters because it's the compass for where to steer and where to improve. Feed Conversion Ratio is one of the clearest gauges of how efficiently your operation turns feed into growth, moving your margin far more than most realize. Seeing whether your FCR is high or low is just the surface. Tracking FCR and the levers behind it reveals how much room you have to improve and exactly what to change, because dozens of small variables feed into that single number. This is what having eyes under the water looks like: not one number, but the full picture of what's driving your margin.

See the impact of FCR on your margin, using your own sales and feed price below

Estimated only. Total cost per kg assumes feed is a fixed share of total cost of sales; every farm's actual costs and margin will differ from this estimate.

This course gives you the capability to collect that data, understand what it means, act on it, and improve it, so you can run a more efficient operation and bring your FCR down.
